Essential

An Essential SSL certificate is a standard SSL certificate, which covers security for a single domain, for example:

https://www.mydomain.com.

It cannot be used to secure subdomains of the same URL.

Essential SSL certificates use domain validation. This validates the domain is registered and someone with admin rights is aware of and approves the certificate request. No company identity information is vetted and no information other than encryption information is displayed within the Secure Site Seal.

Instant

Similar to the Essential SSL certificate, an Instant SSL certificate also covers security for a single domain, however it includes a dynamic site seal, which provides an additional level of confidence. The dynamic site seal is an image embedded on your website and is generated every time a user visits with the date and time. This seal can be clicked to display confirmation that your site has been secured with an Instant SSL certificate.

Instant SSL certificates use organisation validation. This validates domain ownership, plus organisation information included in the certificate (e.g. name, city, county, country). Additional vetted company information is displayed to customers when clicking on the Secure Site Seal, giving enhanced visibility on who is behind the site and associated enhanced trust.

Essential Wildcard

An Essential Wildcard certificate secures your website URL and an unlimited number of its subdomains. A single Wildcard certificate can secure:

  • blog.mydomain.com
  • sales.mydomain.com etc

Wildcard certificates secure websites in the same way as a regular SSL certificate, and requests are processed using the same validation methods. However, some web servers might require a unique IP address for each subdomain on the Wildcard certificate.

Essential Wildcard SSL certificates use domain validation. This validates the domain is registered and someone with admin rights is aware of, and approves, the certificate request. No company identity information is vetted and no information other than encryption information is displayed within the Secure Site Seal.
