2. Transfer an existing domain to us
3. Create a hosting account and update DNS with your current registrar with the IP for the new web hosting (we can provide the IPs if you send through an email or support ticket requesting them)
4. Point your domain DNS to our DNS servers:

- How do I add domain privacy?

For .com domains, you can add ID Protection in your domain management area, by visiting Addons:

This security can be added for other domains at point of purchase or by contacting our Sales team on 020 7183 3655.

For .co.uk domains, this service is free to individuals. This service is not available to registered companies.

What is ID Protection?

International rules require that valid contact information, known as Whois, is available for every domain name. ID Protection masks your identity and provides proxy contact information in the Whois.

ID Protection also reduces spam. In your masked Whois information, we provide a proxy email address that changes several times a year. We forward email sent to the proxy address, but when the proxy address changes, spam sent to the old address bounces.

Why is my personal information available when I purchase a domain name?

International rules require that valid contact information be provided for all domain names, and that it be accessible worldwide. ID Protection provides valid contact information that satisfies the international requirements without exposing your personal contact information to worldwide scrutiny.

What personal information is displayed in domain name Whois, and how do people find it?

Domain name Whois displays name, address and email address. Anyone anywhere can search the Whois database through any search engine and many other websites.

ID Protect provides proxy information instead of your personal contact information. Parties who want to contact you use the proxy information, and we forward to you.

Which TLDs allow ID Protect?

ID Protect can be purchased for the following TLDs: com, net, org, biz, info, name, tv, cc, me.

DNS

- What is DNS?

DNS stands for domain name system. DNS management is a service that translates a domain name into an IP address. A domain name such as domain.com is easier to remember than an IP address (e.g.) 192.168.0.1

DNS records are needed if you have a domain name that is not currently pointing to the correct place. For example, you have a domain name with 4D Hosting and you need to point it to a hosting package with another provider; you would then need to make changes in your DNS to ensure that your domain name is pointing to the correct place.
DNS records are stored in a zone file; the information in this file will allow your domain to point to the correct server or mail server. Some of the different types of records used are listed below:

  • A records, also known as address records, are used to point a domain name or subdomain name to a specific web space using an IP address.
  • CNAME records, also known as canonical name records, are an alias to another name. For example, the CNAME for www.domain.com could be domainname.com. This means that when you go to www.domain.com it will check the DNS records for domainname.com and point you there.
  • TXT records are used to add arbitrary text into a DNS record. This is usually used to add extra rules or formatting to the domain.
  • SPF records, also known as sender policy framework record. This is an email validation system.
  • MX records, also known as mail exchanger records, are used to direct email to the correct mail server.

- What are DNS records?

DNS records are used to map URLs to IP addresses. They are located on servers called the DNS servers, typically connecting your website to the internet. Requests for your website are forwarded to your DNS servers and then get pointed to the web servers that host your website or to the email servers that handle your incoming email.

- How do I set up DNS records?

1. If you don’t have hosting with 4D go to Domains>My Domains, then click ‘DNS Management’:

This will bring up your DNS records. Here you can add and delete records as well as disabling DNS management.
2. If you have hosting with 4D go via the hosting panel (Services>My Services, then View Details>Login to Control Panel):

Enable DNS if disabled:

Then click ‘Edit DNS zone records’:

This will bring up your domain records and allow you to add or delete as necessary.

- How do I find my DNS records?

You can find your DNS records either by logging in to your website panel, going to domainmanagement, then selecting Management Tools>DNS Management:

Alternatively there are online tools such as network-tools.com or mxtoolbox.com, which you can use to view your publicly available DNS records.

- What are nameservers?

A nameserver is a server which controls the domain name system for a domain. It allows you to set which web hosting company controls your web space and email.

A domain registrar should allow you to set or change at least two nameserver entries for your domain name. A hosting company should provide you with at least two nameservers to point to.
The 4D Hosting nameservers are:
- ns1.truedns.co.uk
- ns2.truedns.co.uk

- What is domain parking?

When someone purchases a domain name, they are usually just starting a new website and therefore there is nowhere to point the new domain name to. To allow the purchase of a domain name without assigning it to a website, domain registrars point the new domain name to a dummy page until the website is ready.

If someone enters the new domain name while it is parked, they will be taken to a placeholder page similar to this:

- What is domain propagation?

Domain propagation describes the updating of information across the internet. It consists of changes to your DNS zone and your WHOIS information.
A change to your DNS zone information usually only affects a handful of servers, completing quite quickly.
The WHOIS is the master record, which informs every DNS server in the world of the server for your domain. Changing your WHOIS information can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate as millions of DNS servers need to be updated with the new details.

- What are glue records?

A glue record is an IP address that is assigned or ‘glued’ to a specific domain or subdomain. They are most commonly required for users that are attempting to use nameserver addresses that are subdomains of the domain itself.
For example if you registered the domain example.com and wanted to use nameservers ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com, you would use a glue record to provide the IP addresses for ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com.
If a glue record is not provided, then the domain name example.com would not work as access to this address would put users into a loop:

Visitor> What is the nameserver for example.com?
DNS> ns1.example.com
Visitor> What is the IP address for ns1.example.com?
DNS> I don’t have the IP address for ns1.example.com, please try looking at the nameserver for example.com
Visitor> What is the nameserver for example.com?
DNS> ns1.example.com

Etc

Using a glue record, this scenario is resolved:

Visitor> What is the nameserver for example.com?
DNS> ns1.example.com
Visitor> What is the IP address for ns1.example.com?
DNS> [IP Address]

- How do I find glue records?

You can find your glue records either by logging in to your website panel, going to domainmanagement, then selecting ‘Nameservers’:

Or you can use an online tool such as network-tools.com (clicking ‘Advanced’ next to DNS Records).

- Glue records for creating my own nameservers

Glue records can be created for .com domains using the following method. For all other domains, please contact the support team on 020 7183 0475.

You can create your own nameservers within domain management, then click Management Tools>Register Nameservers:

From here you can create and manage custom nameservers for your domain:

- What is an SPF record?

An SPF record is a type of domain name service (DNS) record that identifies which mail servers are permitted to send email on behalf of your domain.

SPF records prevent spammers from sending emails with forged ‘From’ addresses at your domain. A recipient can check the SPF record to confirm whether a message appearing to be from your domain has come from an authorised mail server. If the email has come from a server other than an authorised mail server (listed in the SPF record), the recipient’s mail server can reject it as spam.

If your domain does not have an SPF record, some recipient domains may reject emails from your accounts because they cannot confirm that the email came from an authorised mail server.

- What is website forwarding?

Website forwarding allows you to automatically direct your domain name’s visitors to a different website.
For example, redirecting twitter.yourdomain.com to your domain’s Twitter page: twitter.com/yourtwitter.
You can also use it if you have multiple top level domains (TLDs) such as .co.uk, .com and .net. You could forward traffic visiting youdomain.com and youdomain.net to yourdomain.co.uk without having to duplicate your website.
You can also mask the destination address so that the address bar displays the address the visitor entered. For example a visitor enters yourdomain.net and is forwarded to yourdomain.co.uk, but the address bar will still display yourdomain.net.
